A Couple of Sheriff’s deputies ran their own little sex sting here in Sarasota resulting in the arrest of a handful of young men ages 18 to 53. The police trolled on Backpage.com, Meetme.com, Craiglslist.com, Grinder.com, Badoo.com and even used KIK messenger. They targeted two young men that were gay. Sadly, young men, barely out of their teens are no match for savvy female detectives twice their age.
In these types of sex stings, the detectives are the real sex predators.
Think of the good that could have been done if the detectives had spent that same amount of time lecturing and speaking at local schools. The real solution is to warn young girls and young men of the dangers of the Internet.
It does no good at all to arrest a bunch of young guys, make them registered sex offenders, stick them in prison and ruin their lives.
Every month in Florida in 2016,so far, there has been another Internet Sex Sting.
There is a fine line between preventing and detecting criminal activity and actually creating it. No one wants kids being seduced on the Internet. We as parents are the front line defense against that. What law enforcement has done in Florida in the last few years however it to actually engage in a pattern of seduction. Police regularly troll social media sites like Grinder.com, Meetme.com, Adam4Adam.com and Whisper.com looking for profiles to contact. This is not a situation where predators are contacting kids. In many of the cases, the undercover police are the predators. They go on adult sites, posing as adults and initiate contact with adults. After the initial contact they will say something like “I have a confession to make, I am only 14”. The police then go on to induce and entice the adult. In a moment of weakness some men fall for this and do not terminate contact.
The police are targeting weak men, luring them into compromising conversations and text exchanges.
The police often invite the men to travel to them and tell them to bring condoms, candy or gifts.
This is just the opposite of what law enforcement should be doing.
Creating crime is entrapment.
The public needs to be educated and enlightened as to what is actually happening in these sex crime cases.
The Internet is a dangerous place. It is dangerous for children and it is particularly dangerous for shy introverted young men who fall for this type of police entrapment. What needs to happen is a concerted effort to educate kids at an early age about the dangers. The police should be in schools lecturing. The police should be educating parents. In almost every one of the sex stings the police arrest many men who were not looking for an encounter with a child.
They are not catching the real criminals. They are creating sex offenders and destroying lives.
These are all questions that have to be answered. Many lives are destroyed by this type of entrapment. Families are broken up with long prison sentences. Men are labeled sex offenders for life. Men are forced to wear electronic monitors and parents often watch a son’s life turned upside down by a moment of weakness.
The latest Florida Internet Child Sex Sting started in July 2014 but is continuing into August2014. Although the official dog and pony media announcement has not been made, it is no secret the Northport police here in Sarasota County have been running a sex sting since Tuesday, August 29th. It is more of the same. The Northport cops in conjunction with the normal ICAC tag alongs must have needed some arrests by the end of the month. Have you ever noticed how at the end of the month all the radar cops are out making arrests to make their quota.
I hate to be critical but given all the bad publicity about wild sex parties by the Northport cops, they could have run their sting in house and cleaned up their own department. The charges are more of the same with arrests for traveling to meet a minor, attempted lewd conduct with a minor and Internet solicitation of a minor. They are on a number of adult social media sites including datehookup.com., meetme.com, badoo.com and the standby craigslist casual encounters.com. They are even targeting Hispanics in this sex sting.
The simple answer is do not commit a crime. Never chat with a minor particularly if they say they are 13 or 14 and say they are home alone “lol”. When you see lol, or a term like “prolly” stop chatting, walk away and tag the site. We all want to keep minors off the Internet. If the police spent what they spend on the average sting ($80,000) on educating children about the dangers of the Internet we as taxpayers would be getting a better bang for the buck. Prevention, not entrapment is the answer. They get fewer and fewer people in each sting. Most of the people arrested are young lonely men with raging hormones. Do not be stupid. Never chat with anyone that says they are a minor. Do not commit a crime and you will not get arrested. The undercover cops are really good at sucking a young unsuspecting man who has no predisposition to have sex with a minor into coming to a take down location.
I have been involved in defending about twenty people in sex stings in the last two years. I breaks my heart to see the police destroying lives and families with terrible entrapment situations. These cases can be defended if the attorney has a good understanding of exactly what the police are doing. Before you plead guilty and have your life destroyed by being a registered sex offender for life, talk to an experienced sex crime lawyer. Every case is different. Who was doing the luring and seducing?W Who brought up travel? Who said bring condoms? Who said will you bring me something to eat? Who is driving the conversation? Terminate all contact and flag the site. Keep kids off the Internet. If you see someone you think is a child, report it. Never, no never chat with a minor

Sarasota Internet Sex Sting Running today, April 26th, 2014
Is 2014 the year of the Internet Sex Stings?Pinellas County sex sting two weeks ago and another one here in Sarasota this week.Just as I predicted, the Sheriff here in Sarasota followed suit and ran another so called “sex predator” undercover Internet operation once again targeting men on adult social media sites. It does not matter that they were not seeking to engage in sex with underage minors. It does not matter that they posted profiles on adult sites looking for consenting adult women. It does not matter that they were not initiating contact. When the smoke clears and the true facts come out, in almost every one of the sex sting arrests the police will be shown to be the driving force, bringing up sex and inviting men to travel (to get arrested)
It is like shooting fish in a barrel for the cops. The FDLE post enticing photos. The internet task force contact men and make suggestive comments.Sex is the ultimate bait and my bet is that by the time this current sting is over, twenty or more men will be entrapped into traveling to meet a minor or tricked into sending suggestive sex photos to what the under cover cops claim is a young girl. They will run the same “home alone” lingo. The best way to not get arrested is to not commit a crime.
Never email a person if they claim to be a minor it is usually the cyber police.Even if they start off saying they are an adult and then say something like “sorry, I lied about my age” terminate all contact immediately.Do not even think about having sex with anyone under 21.I know that is a few years over the limit but don’t take any chances. It is sort of like catching a grouper that is barely over the limit.Don’t take a chance.Throw it back just to make sure.Demand that anybody you email with send you proof of age.Do not accept their word for it.Demand proof of legal age.Never travel to any house to meet with anyone.Always meet only adults only in public places. The Internet is a dangerous place. Craigslist is full of serious predators. Some of them are cops trained and trying to talk you into committing crime.I am not saying don’t get caught.I am saying don’t even think about sex with anyone remotely underage. Do not do it
The latest stings are targeting gay men.Be careful about Adam4adam.com, meetme.com and the other sex hookup sites. As Sarasota criminal defense attorney, I have handled two dozen sex sting cases in Lee, Sarasota, Manatee, Seminole, Hillsborough and Pinellas County. The pattern is always the same.Naïve young men are duped and tricked into doing something they would not normally do by law enforcement trained to get you there.Do not let curiosity lead you into a terrible arrest.Do not do anything that will lead to becoming a registered sex offender. If a relative or close friend get arrested, get good competent legal advice from an attorney who has handled multiple stings. Not all Sarasota criminal defense attorneys have handled these types of cases. In hiring a lawyer, do your homework. It is easy to document the number of actual sex sting cases a lawyer has handled. If you interview an attorney and need representation in a sex sting case like Operation Intercept do not rely solely on advertising.Call me at 941 366 3506
